    Ingredients

This recipe for roasted, sliced sweet potatoes is made with just a light coating of oil and a blend of warm, savory spices.

    Labeled ingredients for this recipe.

    Recipe Variations

It's okay to make this recipe for roasted sweet potatoes with just olive oil, salt and pepper. Or, you can add even more flavor with one of these recipe variations.

Roasted spicy sweet potatoes: Add ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper to give the potatoes a spicy kick of heat.

Chipotle powder: Both smokey and spicy, chipotle powder is made from dried, smoked jalapeño peppers. It is less spicy than cayenne pepper.

Coconut oil: Toss the sweet potatoes in coconut oil instead of olive oil. It gives the dish a sweeter flavor and is delicious if you love the flavor of coconut.

Fresh herbs: Top the roasted potatoes with a sprinkle of fresh parsley, cilantro or chives.

Dried herbs: Add a teaspoon of one or two dried herbs, such as dried thyme or oregano.

Grated parmesan: In the last 10 minutes of baking, sprinkle grated parmesan cheese over the sweet potato rounds.

Goat cheese or feta: Let the rounds cool slightly then crumble goat cheese or feta over the top.

How to Bake Sweet Potato Slices

Just slice, toss in oil and spices, and bake!

A sweet potato peeled and sliced into ½-inch rounds.

Step 1: Slice the sweet potatoes into ½-inch thick rounds. Peeling the potatoes first is optional.

    Serving Suggestions

These sweet potato rounds are best right out of the oven, but they can also be served at room temperature. You can serve oven-roasted sliced sweet potatoes with meat, chicken or vegetables.

Meat: Sweet potatoes are especially delicious with pork, such as Instant Pot pork butt.

Chicken: Try sweet potatoes as a side dish for spicy Instant Pot jerk chicken or the tangy, savory flavors in Instant Pot chicken adobo.

Vegetables: Serve this recipe with Instant Pot black eyed peas and Instant Pot collard greens.

    Expert Tips

    • Slice evenly: Make sure to cut each slice as close to ½-inch thick as possible. This size roasts the best, no burning or raw middles!
    • Peel or don't peel: Deciding whether or not to peel sweet potatoes is a personal preference. Some people like the texture of the cooked peel and some don’t. If you're leaving the peels on, make sure to wash the sweet potatoes really well.
    • Toss by hand: Using a bowl to toss the sweet potatoes in oil makes it easier to coat both sides of every slice. If you lay the slices on a sheet-pan and drizzle oil over the top the slices won’t be evenly coated.
    • Evenly coat with spices: Sprinkling the spice mix over the sweet potatoes and tossing them in a bowl is easier for the same reason - each slice is more likely to get an even coating of spices.
    • Versatile spice mix: If you have leftover spice mix, don't worry! You might even want to make a double batch of the spice mixture and store it in your spice drawer. You can use the flavorful spices to season roasted vegetables, sauteed delicata squash, pork, chicken and pan-seared shrimp.

    Recipe FAQ

Can I skip the seasonings and just use salt?

Yes. You can simply toss the sweet potato slices in oil and salt and bake for the same amount of time.

Do I have to use all of the spices in the mixture?

The blend is very flavorful, mostly savory with just a hint of sweetness from the cinnamon. However, you can leave out one or two of the spices and the flavor will still be delicious.

What is the difference between smoked paprika and sweet paprika?

Paprika is a ground spice powder made from different varieties of dried red pepper pods. The flavor of the paprika depends on which varieties of dried peppers are used. It also depends on where the paprika is from. Hungary and Spain have quite a few distinct types of paprika, which have varying levels of sweet, spicy or smokey flavor.

Most generic paprika in grocery stores is mild and considered "sweet" paprika. For this recipe, you can use sweet paprika along with smoked paprika. Smoked paprika is made from dried peppers that have been smoked over wood.  You can sometimes find smoked paprika in mild, medium, or hot varieties.

Can I make the potatoes sweeter?

Adding more cinnamon to the spice mix will send the flavor in a sweeter direction. You can also add a tablespoon of brown sugar to the spice mix, but keep an eye on the potatoes while roasting - brown sugar tends to burn in the oven. You can also drizzle honey or maple syrup over the sweet potatoes during the last 15 minutes of roasting.

    Ingredients

    Units Scale
    • 3 pounds sweet potatoes
    • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil or olive oil
    • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
    • ½ teaspoon sweet (regular) paprika
    • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
    • ⅛ teaspoon cinnamon

    Instructions

    1. Heat oven to 400F. Set out 2 sheet pans. For easier clean-up, you can line the baking sheets with parchment.
    2. Slice the sweet potatoes into ½-inch thick rounds (peeling the potatoes first is optional).
    3. In a large bowl, drizzle the oil over the potato slices and toss the slices with your hands. Make sure each slice has a light coating of oil on both sides.
    4. In a small bowl, mix together the spices: garlic powder, smoked paprika, sweet paprika, salt, black pepper, cinnamon.
    5. Sprinkle the spice mixture over the slices. Use your hands to toss the slices again, making sure each side of the rounds has been seasoned. You don't have to use all of the spice mixture, just make sure each slice of potato is lightly coated in spices.
    6. Lay the slices out evenly on the two sheet pans, leaving about 1 inch between slices. It’s possible you might need to use a third sheet pan.
    7. Bake for 20 minutes then flip the slices over and bake 15 to 20 minutes more. Keep an eye on the sweet potatoes to make sure they don’t get too dark. The rounds should be very easy to pierce with a fork and the color should be lightly browned.

    Notes

Most generic paprika in grocery stores is mild and considered "sweet" paprika. If you'd like more flavorful sweet paprika, seek out a brand from Hungary or Spain.

Using a bowl to toss the sweet potatoes in oil makes it easier to coat both sides of every slice. If you lay the slices on a sheet-pan and drizzle oil over the top the slices won’t be evenly coated.

Sprinkling the spice mix over the sweet potatoes and tossing them in a bowl is easier for the same reason; each slice is more likely to get an even coating of spices.

You can make half the amount of sweet potatoes if you are feeding fewer people. You can store extra spice mixture in your spice drawer and use it to season roasted vegetables, roasted winter squash, pork, chicken and shrimp.

Deciding whether or not to peel the potatoes is personal preference. The skin adds a chewy texture and earthy flavor.

If you prefer, you can leave out the cinnamon (and use only savory spices) or leave out the black pepper (which makes the sweet potatoes just a little bit spicy.)

Instead of olive oil, you can substitute vegetable oil, coconut oil or avocado oil.

I love how the spices keep these sweet potatoes from tasting too sweet. This is my favorite way to serve them.
